List Of Flowers

The flower is the reproductive structure characteristic of plants or flowering spermatophytes. The function of a flower is to produce seeds through sexual reproduction. For plants, seeds are the next generation, and serve as the primary means through which the species are perpetuated and spread.

All have flowers spermatophytes produce seeds, but the internal organization of the flower is very different in the two main groups of spermatophytes: living gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Gymnosperms may have flowers that gather in strobili, or the same flower can be a fertile strobilus sheet. But a typical angiosperm flower consists of four types of modified leaves, both structurally and physiologically, to produce and protect the gametes: sepals, petals, stamens and carpels.

In angiosperms, the flower gives rise following the fertilization and transformation of some of its parts, a fruit containing seeds.

The group of angiosperms, with more than 250,000 species, is an evolutionarily successful lineage that forms the bulk of the existing terrestrial flora, as you will see in our list of flowers.

The angiosperm flower is the defining character of the group and is probably a key factor in their evolutionary success. Is a complex structure whose organizational plan is preserved in almost all members of the group, but has a tremendous diversity in morphology and physiology of each and every one of its components.

The genetic basis and adaptive such diversity is beginning to be understood in depth, as well as their origin, dating from the Early Cretaceous, and subsequent developments in close interaction with animals that are responsible for transporting the gametes.

Regardless of the above aspects, the flower is an important object for humans. Throughout history and across cultures, the flower has always had a place in human societies, either for their intrinsic beauty or their symbolism. In fact, species grow to provide us with flowers from more than 5,000 years ago and now that art has become an industry in constant expansion: floriculture.
