Good Samaritan saves the day after heartless thieves steal sentimental flowers from Surrey Downs couple

FOR four long weeks, Surrey Downs couple Brian and Ann Bennett wondered how low society could possibly go.

Last month, the pair discovered two of their "magnificent" chrysanthemums had been stolen overnight, just 3m from their front door.

The purple and white flowers with red tips were a Mother's Day gift four years ago from their disabled son, Michael, 36, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

"We were going to put some of the chrysanthemums on my mother's grave," Brian says. "They had struggled to grow until this year ... they were magnificent."

His wife, Ann, was equally gutted. "It was like being winded, punched in the solar plexus," she says.

"It gives you that uneasy feeling that somebody's poking that close to your front door, I was really angry. I'm no green thumb, I'm more of a brown thumb, but the flowers had really taken off after a few years."

Also taken were three little sentimental ornaments – a Pekinese dog from a "dear-departed friend", an angel and a plaque given to Brian as a retirement gift by his daughter-in-law 14 years ago.

But the Bennetts's story had a kind-hearted twist in store.

Last Sunday, after Brian wrote a letter to the editor in the Leader Weekly lambasting the thieves, an anonymous donor left replacement chrysanthemums by their front door.

"There was a lovely note that read ‘to our lovely neighbours, after the theft of your plant we read your article in the Messenger and thought that we would like to replace your plant," Ann says. "It was another punch in the solar plexus, but in a nice way."

(like hanging these insane floral "clouds" from the ceiling of an old hog barn. whose crazy idea was that???) next time i will definitely consider the "how" before I blurt out an untested creative zinger like that! big thanks to my honey-pie for listening to all of my "pie in the sky" ideas and ramblings on this (balloons covered in petals, styrofoam forms with layers of tubed hydrangea wrapped around them, etc) and then figuring out how to engineer their installation. you are a patient and sweet man!
tomorrow I'm kind of, or mostly on my way to my good friend Jose Villa's workshop in Los Olivos. Nevermind my car died an hour ago - and I'm not in LA. but, thanks to the good will ambassador of flowerwild (ambassador of happiness and all things positive (amber moon)) it looks like Jose will get his flowers and some other goodies.

Wake up and smell the flowers: Train carriage transformed into a lush garden to relax city commmmuters.

This is one way for commuters to relax on their hectic early morning trip to work - by sitting back and relaxing in a garden built in an underground train carriage.
The bizarre mobile garden was created by Joseph Baldwin and a team of 10 volunteers, who painstakingly laid over 400 sods of grass throughout the train in Chicago.
Every inch of floor and seat space is covered in lush green plants and grass - making the normally stressful commuter carrier into a tranquil idyll.

And after spending a backbreaking eight hours solid decking out the normally bland train carriage in an explosion of greenery, the group then sent the train around the cities downtown loop.
For one day only thousands of stressed out city workers in Chicago were able to relax in the relatively peaceful mobile garden.

Joseph said: "We rented an L train carriage for one night only and kitted it out with all sorts.
"We managed to plant annual perrenials, natives, houseplants, tropicals, ivy, spider plants, and other vegetables inside the carriage.
"It cost us less than $250 to get everything as we had a lot of substantial donations of plants, volunteer labour and printing.

"Then from five to 10pm on September 17 we circled the downtown loop as a special charter allowing people to come on board and enjoy a peaceful commute.
"Most people loved the visual impact and made friends they were with take their picture in the installation.

"There was plenty of smiles and chatter with strangers - which is not something you normally get on a downtown subway train.
"It really broke the normal gaze of being on a train in the city."
